Hurricane Tips for Seniors

Tips for seniors during hurricane season. Our senior loved ones need special consideration when a hurricane is headed to the area. Here are some tips that can help with safety and preparedness. 1. Contact 3 people that can check in with a visit or call. 2. Put documents in a water safe place like a zip lock bag or even the dishwasher. 3. Prepare a first aid kit. 4. Move the car away from trees and fill the gas tank for them. 5. Food: place some non-perishable snacks near their favorite chair or bed and make a few sandwiches and put them in the fridge with extra beverages as well. Remember bottled water is sometimes hard to open if you have arthritis, so pre-open them or use adult travel cups. 6. Inspect the home for clutter and removed anything that may cause a fall. 7. Check the yard and secure items for seniors like flags, plants, or lawn chairs. 8. Be sure medications organizer is full and nearby. 9. Place a flash light with fresh batteries beside the bed, near the arm chair and in the bathroom. 10. Bring over a radio and don’t forget pet care needs. 11. Be sure the cell phone or cordless home phone is fully charged in case of power loss.
Seniors may experience more anxiety over a weather event such as a hurricane and need someone to help them prepare and provide reassurance. You could be that person!
